From Catherine Jarvis:
Archeotrek
Archeological canoe trip along the Lachine canal and St Lawrence River.
We had the canoe to ourselves with the two tour guides.
It was a beautiful and calm day on the water celebrating Eric's birthday.
Also saw the furier museum and learned about the fur trade in Canadian history.

``Sometimes archaeological sites are best explored by water. The Lachine Canal National Historic Site of Canada and the Lachine Museum offer Lachine Archeo-Trek, a two-and-a-half-hour bilingual expedition led by an archaeologist and historical guide aboard a rabaska canoe. The trek begins at the museum and continues to the Fur Trade at Lachine National Historic Site. It's held Aug. 2, 3, 9, 10, 23, 24, 30 and 31 from 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:15 to 4 p.m. Admission costs $7.90. For departure point information and reservations call (514) 637-7433 or visit www.pc.gc.ca/fourrure.``

...a one-eyed mom, a happy Hebe, stoic Eric ... Did he choose this? Or was it a surprise party? |

And further to that, google a rabaska canoe and you will find that the rabaska is a large traditional birchbark canoe once used by Amerindians. Nowadays it is popular with outdoor enthusiasts because of its capacity and stability. This boat is ideal for small group excursions accompanied by a park warden-naturalist.`.
David is getting more comfortable in a canoe, as am I. I have a heightened respect for the adults who took me canoeing as a child! Arta being my mist salient teacher on this front.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention that David has swapped seats with me in an unexpected storm? He was very braveand cooperative, but hasn't chosen the back of the canoe since. I don't blame him. I haven't offered it either.
fabulous birthday idea!
