Hey Calgary folks: i just saw a wow! documentary last night here in Victoria. It is Nettie Wild's new film, "Koneline: Our Land Beautiful". (It is a Tahltan word, pronounced 'cone-a-LEAN-uh').
Here is the trailer.https://vimeo.com/167817503
It was funny going to sleep dreaming about it, and waking up thinking about all the struggles ahead in BC around pipelines, hydro projects, etc. I woke up this morning feeling equal parts of panic and gratitude about the world. Was reminded of the need to keep seeing the poetry in the world around me (places, plants, animals, people), to keep honouring the struggles in spaces that are healthy and broken.
The film is lovely (and winning awards). At the director talk back, Nettie Wild told us she had tried to make a film with a curious lens, rather than a judgemental lens -- she tried to find the poetry and music in every place she looked. It is film that seeks to capture the amazing beauty of Northern BC, a beauty she feels in her soul. The tag line is "Some mine it. Some hunt it. They all love it." The film is powerful and non-polemical; it leaves so much space to the viewer in terms of context for appreciating what is at stake in the debates about energy, hunting, mining and land. If you get a chance, go see it.
I know it is playing this weekend at the Globe in Calgary! (i want others who can talk with me about it!) Watch out for it at a cinema near you.
You are right. Koneline is showing tonight at the Globe. I don't know if I can make it to Richard III at noon and then Koneline at night. I watched the video clip and read the text. I am looking forward to seeing it.
