January 1, 2024?! It arrived.
And on the front of the local newspaper (yes, the Times Colonist!) was a photo of a new painting by Robert Bateman:
And I had a flashback to the spring of 2022, sitting at the desk in what was Arta's bedroom at the Annis Bay house, and seeing a little burst of colour hopping around on the ground at the bottom of the trees, just out the window.
Having no idea what the heck it was, I posted it to Facebook. It was Tracy Sabey Caldwell who said it was a varied thrush (I had never even heard the name). Tracy for the win!
Here is the video I had posted to Facebook, asking folks if they knew what it was (and where you can see the little bird tossing leaves around, presumably on the hunt for something delicious. Sometimes i think i look exactly like that when i enter the kitchen.)

ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of last winter when I was staying in the house!
Gavin and I had been watching out the window and saw a cute couple Varied Thrushes eating bugs out of the eaves.
A couple days later we had heard some scratching in the ceiling, and after picking up some supplies from the SPCA Gavin went into the attic to search for the culprit.
It turns out one for the thrushes got into the attic and fell into the furnace box in the roof of the kitchen.
Gavin managed to scoop it up, and take it out of the box.
He didn't have a good hold of it, and it managed to slip away from him.
We hadn't heard a thing after that.
I'm happy to read that you and Arta had spotted them together! It makes me think maybe those thrushes were sent from Arta to say hello!
