The Fifth of November

Today is the 5th of November.

I went back to read the lyrics of the poem again.

Well, not until after it had come to mind and I had explained part of it to Michael, Alice and Betty.

Their mother had to explain about bonfires, by telling them that the English bonfires might have been as large as the ones we had in the spring and again in the fall.

They knew all about those.

Here is the explanation of the poem should one want to read it again.

I can only say the first 3 lines from memory, but I can do it with a chilling effect.

 English Folk Verse (c.1870)

            The Fifth of November
    Remember, remember!
    The fifth of November,
    The Gunpowder treason and plot;
    I know of no reason
    Why the Gunpowder treason
    Should ever be forgot!
    Guy Fawkes and his companions
    Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
    All up alive.
    Threescore barrels, laid below,
    To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
    A stick and a stake
    For King James's sake!
If you won't give me one,
    I'll take two,
    The better for me,
    And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn'orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
    Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

  2. With your url you tempted me into going back and taking a look at your own encounter with Guy Fawkes day, complete with the video clips.

Amazing, going back a few years to take another look at the past. I love life in retrospect.

Nice fireworks, by the way. I even like them as seen through the trees.
