Tom's Volleyball Tournament

... giving the ball a bounce ...
I want to journal about Tom’s tournament.

I think because of the happiness I feel when I am watching someone I love in a basketball or volleyball tournament.

I must bring with me all of the joys of the past and being their with my own children – learning the rules of the game, finding out the names of the players, sitting by their parents, shouting out ‘good play’ when a well-oiled team works together to gain a point or two, hearing one of the players call out ‘magnificent’, as I heard one yesterday.

He was right. It was a great play.

the begnning of a running serve ...
I could hear the laughter in the other parents as their shoulders rocked with laughter, as did mine.

I met Bianca, Nadia and Catherine – the trio of other volleyball players who like to some and see Tom.

I talked about Tara Westover’s book, Educated, with one of the parents who had the book sitting on her lap.

She travels a lot, she said, and she carries it with her to read.

Tom's resting stance
Still going at it since August she said and then showed me where she was in the book.

I told her that by the end of the book, having read it twice now, I was thinking about how difficult the relationships can be, between adults who have lived in the same house for many years, both parents and children.

I must have read the book when it first came out. I couldn’t remember doing that. I do remember listening to 4 different interviews with her.

When I picked up the book again, each page I thought, wow, did I hear this in the interview, since it seems familiar to me.

I was many pages in until I figured out, yes, I did read this.

But I didn’t mind a second read since she is clear about what she was thinking during her adolescence and young adult years.

A Metaphor
half the team looks east
the other half looks west
I hear many stories a second time. Anthony’s mother, Caroline, thought the book was about the difficulty for parents of letting their children have choices.

I find the last third of the book compelling and will probably read it again some night, when I am winding down and getting ready to sleep.

Well, watching tournaments, … a joy.

And being literate … another privilege.

Two Happy Spectators

LtoR: Jia's mom, Sheilagh
Thomas's grandmother, Arta
Jia's mother and I introduced ourselves today at the Volleyball tournament.

Jia is Thomas's friend who sometimes studies here, and less often eats here.

Sheilagh and I are no strangers to each other for last year, we shared a meal here at the Jarvis's home.

Now we reconnected at the volleyball game.

We were sitting in a dangerous place -- that is, at the back of the volleyball court where sometimes the ball is coming at a terrific speed.

Today we learned to duck, dodge and keep our eye on the ball.

What I want for Christmas ....

The Shuswap: Summer 2018
Now, if anyone is dying to give me something for Christmas, I have finally decided what I would like to have.

Please send me something about yourself that could go up on this blog.

Or you could put it up here yourself, if you want to try your hand at that.

But I am absolutely available to transfer anything up to the blog if anyone is fearful of trying this on their own.

For example, Rebecca just sent me the following which I am happy to accept as my first Christmas 2018 Gift:
Dated: Dec 1, 2018
I am spending the next few days in Kamloops at the Secwépemc Winter Gathering (Pelltetéqum, or cross over month), for some conversations about our research partnership with the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council. I am looking forward to connecting with friends, learning a few more Secwepemc words for relations, and trying my hand at fish spear making! I will be back at the law school on Monday, December 3.
I would consider a note like this up on the blog as the finest present I could receive this year.

Please, do not let this request take more than 10 minutes of your precious time.

Ponderation

Mondays we have a new timeslot for ponderation in the gym
from 10 am to 12 pm.
Take advantage ....
I was at Thomas's school today watching his volleyball tournament.

In between sets, I walked the hall and one of the electronic signs was rolling around, flashing bits of school news for me (e.g. about the tournament, about school safety, etc.).

When it came to this green screen I stopped to read ....

I just love it when I come across new words.  And yes, a google search verified for me that there is such a word.

I just have never done that kind of work in a study hall.

Santa Suit

... a real Santa Suit, lapels and all ...
Catherine, Hebe and I shopped at Winners after leaving the Barbie Expo -- really Catherine and I were helping Hebe look for Christmas presents.

But this turned into Hebe looking for her own presents in the toy department, and Catherine trying to gather board books for infants, for she likes to give those away as gifts.

On the way out of the store we walked around the perimeter of the shop, passing by men's jackets.

I wanted to take a picture of this one, a jacket that should only be worn to church during December, red lining and all.

How could Hebe have found presents for others when the presents she will get at Christmas loom in her mind.
Second floor of shopping centres at Peel Metro
Behind us is the top of a two-floor high
model dressed in a red sequince dress.

Notice that Hebe's Barbie is in our picture.

The model's red shoe was upstairs by a bannister
and was so large that Hebe could climb
inside of it and  have her picture taken.

Will Santa deliver that American Beauty doll that she has been looking for on ebay.

Will it be back ordered for Santa and she won't get it in time.

So many worries for Hebe that her shopping trip was really ruined by those fears of the unknown.

Well, 24 more days until Christmas, so lots of time to work on settling her fears and finding some gifts for others.

Barbie Poses

More fun at the Barbie Expo!

Rebecca, you asked for Barbie poses.
Who thought they would come from Catherine?

Toes artfully pointed!
Hands gently curving.

There may be a tongue in cheek here
Catherine just can't help herself!

Barbie Expo - Permanent Collection

I had to go to trip advisor to find out everything I needed to know before I went to the Barbie Expo.

"This is not Barbie as you once knew her!
The Barbie Expo, conveniently located in the heart of downtown, in Les Cours Mont Royal, Montreal’s most prestigious upscale shopping mall, is a brilliant and exciting way to showcase the haute couture fashion available at the exclusive flagship boutiques within the mall.

The stunning display houses over 1000 dolls, and is the largest permanent Barbie doll Expo in the world! A truly incredible selection of world-renowned designers have magnificently fashioned breathtaking outfits for every possible occasion—all of them modeled by the 11.5 inch fashion icon herself.
Admission is free.
Designers on display include Christian Dior, Donna Karan, Armani, Ralph Laurent, Vera Wang, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Christian Louboutin, Zac Posen, Carolina Herrera, Bob Mackie, and many other authentic fashion all-stars!"
I just happened upon this spot as I was walking the malls one morning after riding the Montreal Metro with Mary to the hotel where she was going to a transportation conference.

The admission was frree.

Mermaid Barbie
What's not to like about that.

The venue is stunning.  Marble floors.  Huge chandeliers.  A fountain whose water goes at least 5 feet high.  Many stems of orchids around the edge of the fountain.   I could have been in a Los Vegas venue for the beauty of it all.

I decided to talk my walker back there on a subsequent visit and just sit for a whole day, moving it from display case to display case.

I haven't been able to get the walker back there, but today was my fourth trip to the venue, this time with Catherine and Hebe.

I have great admiration for anyone who sews, let alone someone who sews, glues and appliques tiny costumes like the ones on these dolls..
