Assignment #4: Music Video

Well, the final assignment for the Premiere Pro video editing course I took this summer was to do a Music Video.  

We were encouraged to think about 'copyright' in our selection of music.   So.... I sent a note off to my singer/songwriter nibling Meighan Johnson, and she sent me a 'pre-production' version of a song that she wrote! [completed album is scheduled for the fall?]

I canvassed my siblings for ideas about what to do for the song, and settled on the idea of using the amazing marionettes of us that Bonnie commissioned from Elizabeth Pattie (since Bonnie had all of them at her place in Salmon Arm).  We thought it would be fun to have the marionettes hanging out doing things in different places on the property.

My role in all of this was only to do the EDITING (that was the point of the course, afterall).   

I was very happy to have the siblings and niblings do the work of gathering video assets for me to work with!  So Mary and Bonnie got busy making a 'storyboard' of ideas for filming. And then Mary, Bonnie, Michael, Alice and Betty headed off in to the woods, armed with my camera, on a quest for filming locations.  Between the group of them, they took turns behind the camera lens, and operating the marionnettes!

Going back to our first family conference presentation!

As we were cleaning up some of Arta's old binders of "'Notes", we came across a bunch of papers related to our first academic conference as a group!  What was interesting to us was thinking about what Arta saved, and reflecting back on the work and advocacy she did to try and press the group of us in the direction of academic engagement.  So.... here are the documents there, and our attempts to reconstruct a timeline. 

So, we do all remember that, back in the summer of 1990, Arta harnessed us to participate in the first academic conference on Mormons in Canada. 

In the binder, we found a copy of the preliminary program for that conference.  

We also found a letter Arta wrote to Dr. Perry (probably after she had seen the call for papers, or that preliminary program).  From the letter, you can tell that she had probably noticed the absense of attention to women or gender, and had phoned him, proposing that we do a session for the conference, something on Alberta Mormon Women.  Here is the letter she wrote to him, following up on the conversation (where we imagine he must have told her to put something in writing.

It does not look very much like what a conventional academic proposal looks like.  :-).   And the program was likely already set.  Still.... she must have been somewhat persuasive, as he clearly told her to provide him with an abstract and bios, because we also found those in the binder (three weeks after her first letter).

And here is the abstract of the proposed session:

While we were not on the final printed program (not surprising, since Arta was doing last minute advocacy to try to ensure their were Mormon women's voices present in the conversation), we were definately a part of the conference, though without either Mary or Dad participating.

In the binder, Arta also had kept a followup note by her: 

This also led to her proposal that we do another set of papers at the Sunstone Conference that was happening in Salt Lake City at the end of the summer.

This is a really old one.   From the labelling, I think these are three of the children of John and Peggy Pilling who immigrated to the USA from Waddington, UK as part of that early wave of Mormons moving to the USA.  I think Richard (in the middle) eventually marries Catherine (in the photo above).

I'm putting these photos here for the cousins. Here are a few early Pilling Family Photos. These black and white photos were in Arta's collection.

What I loved was seeing a young Wyora with her two small children, photos of my mother Arta as a baby and a few photos of the Pilling Gang as children maybe before a wedding.  See if you can figure out who is who.

Pilling Children, we suspect getting ready for a wedding.  Who do you think  was getting married?
