Inclement Weather A Factor As Fire Engulfs Six Homes In Citadel

This just hit the news-wires. The fire occurred in West Citadel, on the far side of the community where we live.

Calgary firefighters battled a six-house fire in Citadel early Saturday morning, December 5.

"I know it started in one (house) and with the weather conditions it spread to the other five," said duty inspector Vic Trickett.

The fire, which took place near Citadel Forest Place and Citadel Forest Close NW, is now under control but it's unknown if there were any injuries.

    holy crap! how many blocks away was it? that is pretty damn scary. is that photo one you took yourself, or is it from the news?

    The first photo above is from the news service. The other photo is from another fire. West Citadel is about 10 blocks from us. Pretty scary to be in the middle of a terrible winter storm, and be out on the street because your house is on fire.

    I went out to the Calgary Herald link in one of Doral's posts and then clicked on the news about the fire and then the gallery of photos attached to it. Five or six pictures from different angles -- all of those beautiful homes are only rubble now, with a picture of one couple wearing masks and surveying the ruin. So amazing ... it is so cold here, one cannot imagine how a fire could keep going, let alone jump to 4 other houses. But if you have been out in the wind that is going 70 mph or seen the height of the drifts it is easy to see how this could happen.

    I looked out of Trell's window and saw a 3 foot high drift down one side of his yard and the other side of the yard is bare of snow. The drift is not rounded but slopes up to a ridge and then drops straight down so there is this exquisite, artistic line that follows the top of the drift. I asked Trell how often he sees this in his back yard and he said, "Never before."

    I saw this same beautiful line on a drift on one lane of the highway, only the highway drift was at least 10 feet high ... maybe more for I am trying not to exaggerate. Of course the beauty of the drift was lost for me when I saw a car beside the drift, the car now covered with 3 feet of snow and only a bit of the passenger window and the top of the car now showing.
