Glen had the idea that a person could make a container garden using the barrels Ron Treleaven no longer needs for a dock.
Glen and David cut them in half for me, and made holes in the bottom through which water can drain.
The barrels were filled with 1/3 sand and then Joaquim and I got busy mixing wheel barrows loads full of 1/3 loam, 1/3 clay and 1/3 manure and topped the barrels up.
Though it appears that we are trying to grow a boy in one of the barrels, all ten of them are slated for tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, zucchini, beans and more tomatoes. The giant pumpkin plant seeds are in the front room window, and they will be the first thing to get planted in one of the barrels.
I tested a couple of the geraniums as well, hardening them off during the day and then leaving them out one night.
That was a mistake.
Now I have 3 geraniums with frost-bitten leaves and the added knowledge that people who live in the area say, as we do in Calgary, "Don't plant before the May long week-end".
After the fact, Bonnie, Joaquim and I all say that doing all of this garden exercise feels good. We have no idea if we will get any vegetables.
Come! Visit in the summer and see.
