"Rabbit" |
An old English custom is to be the first person who says “rabbit” at the beginning of a new month. Xavier is the person who will have good luck this month, having been the first person up in the morning to say rabbit.
His good luck began with breakfast.
Last night his mother decorated a cake to honour the beginning of February. Everyone had a piece for breakfast, singing both Happy Birthday to February and A Very Merry Unbirthday to the rest of us. In discussion about the size of the pieces to be offered, and given it is not always good to have sugar for breakfast, the choices of piece sizes were small, smaller and smallest.

The cake already had a piece the size of a pie cut out of it, a piece that was an adult treat to the decorators of the cake the night before. Evening adult treats have a fifty-year old tradition in our family, for that is how long they have been going on. Children were put to bed, believing that when they were asleep, the adults would begin to have fun, bringing out the bridge mix and playing cards until the early hours of the morning. This only happens sometimes, to the consternation of some who have now grown up to be adults. A life-changing experience to find that the adult treats magically appear if Wyona is around!
The rest of the time treats are self produced as this cake might have been last night by the two people who sat down in the very late evening hours to have their piece, un-iced
I was one of those people.

Too many posts! I can't keep up! Looks like a veritable bakery in Ottawa-Hull. Wish I was there! Keep posting as I am off to read 4 chapters of a book, knowing I will only understand 1/2 of one chapter.
