Rotten Teenagers -- or, the garlic harvest

Here in Ottawa, our Stake has been working together with the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OCAPDD) for many years (I have no clue, but more than 15 years I think).  We provide human power for a couple of fundraising activities they do on a yearly basis.  One is wrapping presents at a mall during the Christmas season and the other is providing support to a garlic farm.  We help plant, weed, and harvest the garlic throughout the year.

Here are some photos from this year's harvest.

This is Xavier and his friend Jack stacking the garlic in the barn.  You'll see a giant fan behind them.  There are a few of these throughout the barn, circulating the air so that the garlic will dry faster and be ready in a week or two to sell.

This is me standing in the barn in front of the shelves of garlic.  Xavier had been throwing burrs at me all evening.  I thought he was throwing them randomly.  I was wrong.

And here I am outside the barn, standing in front of the burr bushes.  Who knew they grew anywhere other than the lake?

How can you be mad at a teenager who throws a smiley-face of burrs on your back?

  1. The task looks fun. How many people from the ward came out to help? Do you have a potluck afterward, or just wend your way home? How is the smell of fresh garlic?

I buy my garlic at Askews. The last time I was there, I was picking up a few toes of garlic and the lady next to me snatched them out of my hand and put them back. Then she gave me a lecture on buying local garlic, even if it did cost a little more. I did as she said. Will you be buying this garlic in your local store in a few weeks, or is it exported?
