Pericles

Deborah Hay as Marina
and Evan Buliung as Pericles in
The Adventures of Pericles.

(David Hou)

I have to start a long way ahead to go to a Shakespeare play that I am not familiar with. Pericles is one of these plays.

Here it is as reviewed by J. Kelly Nestruck in The Globe and Mail

I started looking for help to understanding this play a couple of weeks ago.

Then if I have a spare 10 minutes or so, I try to map out the plot or the characters so that I won't be lost at sea, so to speak.

The Star also reviews the play.

I hope I can keep up with it when I see it on Saturday.

I am looking forward to 2 hours and 45 minutes of a play I haven't seen before.

Between what I see on screen from Stratford, from the New York Met and from London's National Theatre, I am not having to do old plays unless I want to see something twice.

  1. In celebration of your birthday, Alex and I are going to go see the play. He has been up since 3:30am, so i suspect he may sleep through part of it. but that might be true for you too! :-) happy birthday!

  2. I was worried about sleeping through the play myself. So I planned to get help.

    1. I took a 40 minutes power nap before I went to the play.
    2. I had 3 cans of Coke with me. Caffeine does wonder.

  3. I love coke during a show. And maybe before and after also.

  4. For me, the coke is medicinal.

    :-)

No, really, it is hard to pay $18 to $28, depending on the show, and then to fall asleep for half of it. This is no reflection on the show -- just that when my body decides to sleep, it does. Now I could go back and see the show a second time, and try to pick up on what I missed, but I can't really compelled my body to stay awake for the second time when it doesn't always cooperate with me the first time.

So ... better to force myself to stay away in this lovely fashion. So good to have my life filled with this kind of pain.
