Betty Wants to Read

Betty wants to learn to read.

This slowed us down a lot when we were at the Salmon run.

Every time she would pass a sign, she had to stand and look at the text.

She would read outloud, her fingering following along, telling us about what was going on:  perhaps what was in the picture at the side of the text.

Or she would explain something about the path, or the fence that we had just seen that was shaped like the original indigenous nets to catch fish, or she would tell us something about the trees or the rocks along the way.

I have the feeling that if I took her for a few days and began with some of the pre-reading material, that she would be decoding the puzzle of reading right away.

I think she is too young.  Three is a little early to start reading.  On the other hand, if she is left alone, she just may crack the code on her own.
