The Dig and Sutton Hoo

I had the incredible experience of visiting Room 41 of the British Museum some years ago.

Among other artifacts in that room, there is a beautiful belt buckle from the dig at the Sutton Hoo.

I had forgotten all about that until I began to watch Simon Stone’s new movie “The Dig” (2021), available now on Netflix.

This is an incredible movie, calm long shots, a movie about beads of water hanging on blades of grass and walks through a field to get to the Hoo, which apparently means a hill shaped like a heel spur.

Fact and fiction, objects found from as long ago as the 4th Century – which seems like an incredibly long time ago. And the arc of lives lived, some fully, some cut short. A beautiful two hours spent looking at the screen.
