Eighty Memories for Eighty Days: #80 Learning about The Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Mandate

Rebecca's annotation of Calls 1 to 94
I suspect anyone could get a copy of this.
Perhaps if she reads this, she will put a link to it.
I missed the politics around the largest payout our nation has ever made in a class action lawsuit: money to the survivors of the residential schools.

That act was not a payout to all of the residential school survivors, only some.

I missed the significance of the payout and the significance of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission which is really a blueprint to action.

I was to learn more as I watched Rebecca both preparing for and then giving a lecture to first year law students, preparing them for a 2-day workshop on this topic.

I have seen her do this presentation more than once.

I internalized the message of the commission, and take seriously my own responsibility to learn about this part of our past.

Every day I tried to read something more.

I have surrounded myself with more reading than I can get done.

That is the way it should be – for me at least, seeing what is ahead and devising a plan so that I can be part of the 94 Calls to Action.
This is the page where the call to action to all churches is found.
Call to Action #60 is for all churches,
not just those who are a party to the settlement.

Our government has called on certain sectors to make changes: Health Care Professionals, Medical and Nursing Schools, Law Societies, Law Schools, Public Servants, The Corporate Sector and religious communities. It has also invited all Canadians to participate in the task of reconciliation.
My copy of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered
Indigenous Women and Girls:

One of my cherished memories is my own awareness of changes I can make.

So far, I have read and annotated the Summary from the Commission.

Twice.

Right now, I am trying to read the full report from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
This can be read online.

Again, this is not a satisfying way for me to read.  So Rebecca printed one copy back to back and had it bound -- 3 large books and 1 medium book.  Dense reading.  I have decided not to skim.

I think for my own peace of mind I should keep a list somewhere of other books that will lead toward reconciliation. Maybe I will do that  the decade of my eighties, which is just around the corner.
